Your Questions, Answered
What is ICSI?
ICSI stands for Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection. ICSI is an advanced breeding technique in which a single sperm is injected directly into a mature eg (oocyte) under a microscope. Oocytes (eggs) are collected from the mare’s ovaries through a procedure called ovum pick-up (OPU), then matured in the laboratory before ICSI.
The resulting embryos are cultured until they reach. stage suitable for transfer into a recipient mare or vitrification (feeling) for future use,
ICSI allows breeders to make use of small quantities of valuable semen and/or obtain embryos from mares with a history of poor fertility.
What success should I expect?
Our lab is run by experienced equine embryologists with excellent embryo production rates.
Our embryologists aim to achieve 25-30% blastocyst rates and depending on the number of oocytes obtained at OPU by your veterinarian, this generally results in 1-2.5 blastocysts on average per session.
It is important to note that when these statistics are averaged on a per OPU session, we expect 60-70% of OPU sessions to result in at least 1 embryo.
Which veterinarians can perform OPU
OPU (oocyte pick-up) aka Trans-vaginal Aspiration, is a specialised technique that requires experiences equine veterinarians to ensure the safety and efficacy of the procedure. Click here for a list of partner equine veterinary hospitals that can perform the OPU and send oocytes to BioQuine.
